Michelin has confirmed that it has extended its contract as the sole Formula E tyre supplier until the end of the 2018/19 season, as the all-electric series gears up for its second year.
The French tyre manufacturer has been a key partner of the Championship, having initially signed a deal to be the exclusive rubber supplier for the first two years of the fledgling series.
Pascal Couasnon, Head of Michelin Motorsport, commented: “We are delighted to have been selected by the FIA once again and to be able to continue our involvement in this competition which Michelin helped to found”
“Formula E is a superb laboratory to foster innovation in the field of durable mobility in cities and built-up areas and Michelin is actively exploiting this golden opportunity.”
Michelin currently supplies all-weather, treaded 18-inch tyres for Formula E. This approach ensures that the tyres are suitable for all weathers and provide grip on the series’ street circuits, allowing it to reduce carbon emissions by transporting fewer units around the world – in line with Formula E’s ethos.
The French manufacturer is a keen proponent of the larger wheel size, which forms the backbone of its current entry to become the sole supplier for F1 for 2017-2020. Its entry is currently being reviewed by the FIA and FOM.
