Taking fan engagement to new levels

Formula E may be set to experiment with mid-race fan engagement as it looks to capitalise on its impressive social media following.

Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag has proposed the prospect of letting fans vote for their FanBoost pick during the first ten minutes of the race, providing a more dynamic feedback between on-track action and socially-savvy supporters.

Speaking with Formula E Zone Mr Agag commented: “We are trying to convince the FIA to allow us to keep voting for the first ten minutes of the race, rather than stopping ten minutes before the start of the race. This will give the fans a bigger influence on the race as it happens, which will make it more fun.”

Social vs sporting

The FanBoost concept has been met with mixed reaction. Personally I consider it a shrewd move by Formula E, as it has a well-defined and active following on social media which enables greater interaction than any comparable sports.

Yet some have argued that it is not a sporting approach, offering an unfair advantage to some drivers over others – a view shared by the FIA according to Mr Agag.
